You Can Watch Finn’s Scrapped Star Wars Stormtrooper Rebellion - In A Completely Different John Boyega Movie (2024)

Warning! This article discusses major plot points and SPOILERS.

Summary

  • Finn's stormtrooper rebellion plot was scrapped in Star Wars, but John Boyega got a chance to realize it in They Cloned Tyrone.
  • They Cloned Tyrone proves Boyega's potential in the sequel trilogy was underutilized, and that he's a fantastic actor.
  • Star Wars missed its first opportunity for the stormtrooper rebellion, but there are several ways it could be used in the future.

Finn's stormtrooper rebellion didn't make it into Star Wars, but it survived in a completely different John Boyega movie. Finn was one of the most prominent characters in the sequel trilogy of Star Wars movies, but a common criticism about the trilogy is that he felt underutilized towards the end. Finn had a lot of potential when he first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he took a back seat to Rey Skywalker's story. One plot point for the final installment in the Skywalker saga would have changed that, if it hadn't been scrapped.

Throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, it was hinted that Finn would one day help start a stormtrooper rebellion. He was a rebellious stormtrooper himself, and a deleted scene from Star Wars: The Last Jedi that saw Finn turning Captain Phasma's troopers against her would have set it up perfectly. The stormtrooper rebellion is just one way Finn's Star Wars story could have been improved, but it only appeared in an unused script known as Duel of the Fates, which was the original plan for The Rise of Skywalker. Interestingly, the rebellion received new life in a completely separate movie that starred John Boyega.

They Cloned Tyrone Is Likely As Close To Finn’s Stormtrooper Rebellion As We’ll Ever See

In 2023, John Boyega starred in They Cloned Tyrone as the movie's main character, a drug dealer named Fontaine. They Cloned Tyrone quickly leapt into the realm of science fiction, though, as Fontaine discovered that he and the other community members in his neighborhood were being cloned as part of a massive government conspiracy to control the rest of the community. By the end of They Cloned Tyrone, Boyega's character had united his neighborhood, assaulted the cloning facility, and freed the clones.

They Cloned Tyrone is a comedic sci-fi mystery movie by director Juel Taylor and writer Tony Rettenmaier. They Cloned Tyrone's plot bears a striking resemblance to Finn's stormtrooper rebellion, even if some details have been changed. While stormtroopers may not have been clones, and those clones didn't actively know they were part of this conspiracy, there are still several parallels to draw. Like the stormtroopers, the clones were being used as tools of a tyrannical government. Like Finn, Fontaine was one of those tools, until he learned the truth and decided to fight back. It's essentially the same story Duel of the Fates would have told, and They Cloned Tyrone proved how well Finn's stormtrooper rebellion would have worked.

They Cloned Tyrone Shows How Much Potential Boyega Had As Finn

They Cloned Tyrone not only proved how well the stormtrooper rebellion could have been, it also proved how well John Boyega could have been if Finn had a meatier part in the sequel trilogy. Fontaine is a decidedly more serious character than Finn, but Boyega played him perfectly. It's proof that if Star Wars wanted to, the franchise could have relied on Boyega as a true leading actor. He could have been wonderful in the stormtrooper rebellion plot, or any plot that demanded more dramatic acting than the sequel trilogy gave him.

Finn

Brainwashed as a stormtrooper for the First Order, Finn was able to resist his conditioning - likely due to his Force-sensitivity. Initially unwilling to ally with the Resistance, he nonetheless eventually chose to side with them, and became a good friend to both Rey and Poe Dameron. Finn led a squad of ex-stormtroopers during the fateful Battle of Exegol, a conflict that saw him finally embrace the Force.

Will Star Wars Ever Show A Stormtrooper Rebellion Story?

Star Wars missed its first chance to tell a story about a stormtrooper rebellion, but there are still plenty of opportunities to work it into the future of the franchise. Perhaps the easiest way it could be done is through Jannah, the ex-stormtrooper Finn met in The Rise of Skywalker. Jannah mentioned that she and her squad rebelled offscreen on Kef Bir. Star Wars could easily use Finn's stormtrooper rebellion with Jannah instead, potentially in a show that takes place just before The Rise of Skywalker. The characters and story have already been established, so Jannah seems like a natural choice for this plot.

Many Star Wars actors are mostly known for their time in the galaxy far, far away, but many of them have great movies and shows outside the franchise.

Jannah isn't the most recognizable or popular character in Star Wars, though, so while she would be the easiest choice, she might not be the best. Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to work it in. The rebellion plot could even focus on Finn, as he may appear in New Jedi Order. The upcoming movie would have to do some legwork to make it possible, such as establishing that there were First Order remnants like there were Imperial remnants, but New Jedi Order could feasibly include scenes of Finn working to free them. Otherwise, a different show, like Andor, could incorporate such a plot.

There are plenty of ways Star Wars could revisit Finn's stormtrooper rebellion, but none of them seem likely to happen any time soon. Luckily, They Cloned Tyrone already works as a more than suitable replacement. In fact, They Cloned Tyrone is a great sci-fi movie on its own with a powerful, thought-provoking message, and it proved that Boyega is a master of the genre. Star Wars may not have included Finn's stormtrooper rebellion, but They Cloned Tyrone did, and showed how good it could have been.
